The Boeing 737 is a twin-engine narrow-body jet airliner designed as a short- to medium-range aircraft. Derived from the 707 and 727 as a short, low-cost airplane, it currently has nine passenger models with passenger capacities ranging from 85 to 215. The 737 is Boeing's only narrow-body airliner currently in production, with the -600, -700, -800, and -900ER variants currently being built. The original 737-100 first flew in 1967 and entered commercial airline service in 1968. In April 1968, the longer 737-200 entered service. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Boeing launched the -300, -400, and -500 models. These were referred to as the Boeing 737 Classic series. The 737 Classic series added capacity and incorporated turbofan engines along with wing improvements.

The 737 Next Generation models are comprised of the -600, -700, -800, and -900ER models. They range from 102 ft to 138 ft in length. Boeing also produced Business Jet versions of the 737 Next Generations. The 737 series is the best-selling jet airliner in aviation’s history and has been continuously manufactured by Boeing since 1967. As of December 2011, there have been over 7,000 aircraft delivered and over 2,300 orders yet to be fulfilled.
